Allergies and intolerances

The immune system reacts to an allergen this will trigger an allergic reaction. Allergies can be caused by food, plants, animals, environment and chemical products. Especially food allergies can cause problems, often one doesn’t think straight away of a food intolerance or allergy.

Summary of possible allergy symptoms:

immediate allergic reaction:

  1. anaphylactic shock (severe)
  2. rash
  3. lumps and swelling (like lips, eyelids, throat)
  4. trouble breathing, wheezing, asthma
  5. difficulty swallowing

delayed allergic reaction:

  1. gastrointestinal complaints
  2. sinusitis symptoms
  3. puffy eyes
  4. itching / rash
  5. edema
  6. muscle ache
  7. acne
  8. eczema
  9. lethargic
  10. headache ( migraine)
  11. hyperactivity (especially in children)

Allergies in infants and in young children are often caused by an underdeveloped digestive tract. If you give a baby solid food at a too early age (younger than 1 year) this can lead to an increased risk of food allergies. Baby powder milk and cow's milk contains large molecules that are difficult for babies to digest. It is recommended to breastfeed as it reduces the risk for food allergies.

Many foods today contain food additives (coloring and flavoring) these are substances which the body can get an allergic reaction to, which can even lead to a poor thyroid function.
